30.06.2004The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reports that 95% of phishing e-mails come from forged e-mail addresses and argues that emerging e-mail authentication standards could help guard against such scams. Phishing scams mimic e-mails and websites of legitimate businesses in order to trick users into divulging sensitive personal data, such as bank account passwords. 5% of phishing e-mail recipients divulge personal information. Research conducted with Tumbleweed Communication found that 1,197 unique phishing attacks occurred in May 2004, compared with 1,125 in April; 848 attacks targeted the financial sector.
